Virtual User Minute is the amount of time a particular virtual user is simulated to load a target resource. Or put another way, Virtual User Minute is a sum of the total number of users simulated per each test minute.
For example, 12 virtual users are used for a Load Step Stress Test for a 5 minute duration. The load curve is specified in the following way: two users are simulated from the test beginning, then after 2 minutes 10 users are additionally simulated. So we have the following distribution of Virtual User Minutes (VUM):
- 1st minute – 2 users
- 2nd minute – 2 users
- 3rd minute – 2 users + 10 additional users= 12 users
- 4th minute – 12 users
- 5th minutes – 12 users per each minute
The total VUM is a sum of the number of users calculated per each minute of the test: 2 + 2 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 40 VUM.
