How to Edit an FTP / SFTP / FTPS Task

Once you have created a device and are adding or editing an FTP / SFTP / FTPS task, you will be prompted to adjust the following settings:

During task configuration you will be prompted to adjust these basic settings:



Task Name: Provide a descriptive name for the task so that you would be able to identify the task later among a list of similar tasks.  For example, “ FTP test.txt”

Maximum Connection Timeout (in seconds): Enter the number of seconds the task should wait for a response from the web page before aborting the task and returning an error.  If this is left blank the default timeout for a task is 120 seconds.

Server:  Enter the FTP server address.  This could be the URL or the IP address.

Log in to Server: 

When disabled –Dotcom-Monitor® connects to the destination address and port and check for successful connection.


When enabled – the authentication procedure will perform the following steps using the credentials supplied below:

  1. The authentication will be attempted using the following methods::
    1. CRAM_MD5
    2. Login
    3. Plain
    4. Simple
    5. SSL/TLS

If none of the methods have succeeded unencrypted, the socket is switched to SSL and repeats each method: CRAM_MD5, Login, Plain and Simple until a positive response is received (according to RFC 5034 on authentication mechanisms).

User Name: If you have selected Yes for the field Login to Server: enter the user name here.

Password: If you have selected Yes for the field Login to Server:  enter the password associated with the username here.

Directory:  Enter a directory you wish to check once you have authenticated to the FTP server.  You must be logged in and have selected Get Directory Listing in order to check for the existence of a directory.

Get Directory Listing: When enabled –files stored at a directory will be listed.  You must select login to server in order to get the directory listing.

Check File:  If you wish to check for the existence of a specific file or set of files, enter the file names in the check file fields.  You must be logged in and have selected yes, get directory listing in order to check a file.

You may use a wildcard * in the filename to specify a partial filename match. for example: testfile*  would match both testfile1 and testfile2016.

Download File: When file name specified – first 2Mbytes will be downloaded in order to check accessibility

Encryption: defines what method will be used during monitoring session.
